I’m planning on getting a new laptop/notebook. The ones with 1G of ram cost a lot more than 512MB. My home computer ran OK on only 128 MB for several years until I recently updated it to 512. It now runs all my programs just fine with 512. Why would I need 1G of RAM. Is it worth the extra money to get the 1G?

it depends upon your usage and requirements. If you are looking to upgrade to vista and stuff you need 1gb even though microsoft tells u 512 is good enough. But you will be able to notice some difference when multitasking.
more is always better especialy if your getting a machine with vista on it if you are then opt for 2 gb of ram or more
Get 2 Gigabytes or RAM. You will be very thankful when you upgrade to Vista. I have been testing Vista extensively for 2 months now and even if Microsoft says 1 Gigabyte will be enough the tests show that you will not get an optimal performance with 1 Gigabyte (unless you want to use the basic version with the cool 3D transparent windows etc).
This is an individual decision and is based on what you intend to do on the computer.
I don’t do games, but usually have two or three programs running simultaneously. I have 512mb RAM, but have done all I know of to free up my memory — removed wallpaper and screensaver, save files frequently, and only load Office at startup. For anything else I don’t use on a daily basis – I can wait a minute for the load. It also helps to run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk and defrag regularly.
Graphics consume memory. If you are only into serious work, you should be able to get by with 512mb.
Ram is the best value for a computer upgrade. I defently not get a computer with less than 1 GB these days with all the memory intensive programs and multi tasking being done. (I personaly have 2 GB)
If you download music or store photos or any other memory intensive It helps to have one gig.That’s what I have and I don’t freeze up like I used to.You don’t go into virtual memory as much either.
if you had a desktop i’d say yes, but with a laptop 512MB is fine.

It’s hard to say without knowing what you use your pc for, and how many programs you have running at the same time. But, all that being said, getting the 1GB of RAM is definitely worth it, given the complexity of today’s programs, not to mention the requirements of Windows Vista. Good luck.
