Motherboard is the platform where all other components are installed on. It’s the part that makes the devices communicate with each other and work together. It’s an important task to choose the best possible affordable motherboard when building a gaming computer. This article will be discussing on how to achieve this goal.
CPU Socket Type
This is one of the most important factors and choosing which socket type you are going to use beforehand eases choosing the motherobard. For instance, choosing an AMD CPU confines you to motherboards with those sockets AMD products use. Other CPUs won’t be fitting into that motherboard.
Because there are a couple socket types from both Intel and AMD, there are totally about four different sockets. This means that from all the desktop computer motherboards, you can use a fraction of them in your computer building project.
This may seem irrelevant to choosing a motherboard. In actual fact, this is the most important thing you need to do before selecting a motherboard. The reason being that the type of CPU will determine the type of motherboard you need. For example, if you choose an Intel CPU, then you have to get the socket 775 motherboard or else the CPU won’t fit into the motherboard. Deciding on the type of CPU will help you to make a better choice when choosing the best gaming motherboard.
Memory Support
Your motherboard will be able to take a specific kind of memory. Today the common types are DDR2 and DDR3 from which DDR3 is the fastest in the market. Another thing to note is the highest speed of RAM the motherboard supports. Some of them can support only DDR2 800 Mhz memory while others can use DDR3 1300 Mhz. On top of all that you can have a specific amount of memory which is told in the product label.
Many motherboards have support for dual channel meaning that using two, four, six etc. similar memory sticks will enhance the performance because these memory modules can be accessed in parallel. Triple channel is the new version of this technology meaning that you can use three memory modules in parallel.
SLI/Crossfire Ready
SLI and Crossfire technologies mean that you can use two identical graphics cards at the same time to achieve the ultimate graphics performance in games. This feature is still missing from many motherboards but the future games and applications will be more demanding so some day every every motherboard will have it some day. For the sake of your computer’s upgradeability, buying a SLI or Crossfire compatible motherboard is recommended.
Overclocking Features
In case you want to overclock your CPU, your motherboard must allow to change the voltages and the FSB speed.
Other Features
You may want your motherboard to have other features such as ports for USB 3.0, FireWire and so on. Some motherboards contain more features than others so you just have to compare products to know the differences.
Integrated video cards in high-end gaming purposes is totally obsolete because they simply don’t offer enough performance. Integrated sound cards can instead be a good alternative for a separate sound card.
Conclusion
While looking for a gaming motherboard, it’s advisable to do some detective job and compare several boards. Because it’s one of the most important parts of your computer, do your research well and don’t buy the cheapest one.
