Is it safe to upgrade RAM from two completely different computers?

Question by calaberman: Is it safe to upgrade RAM from two completely different computers?
Okay so I have RAM from an old eMachines Computer with about 512 MB of RAM. That computer crashed and I’m stuck with an HP with about 200 and something MB of RAM. I know buy a new computer and I will but for now I have to deal with this. So will it be safe to just add the two sticks of RAM in two the HP?

  1. In short NO.

To mix RAM from different computers you need to make sure that the computer that you are sticking these chips in is okay with the speed of the RAM from the emachine. You should do some research and look on both emachine and HPs’ websites and see what speeds of RAM each carries.

If you need help researching, let me know.

  2. It’s highly unlikely, but if the RAM is the same model, you should be good..

but RAM is dirt cheap now anyways.. just cough up the $30 for some new RAM, it’s cheaper than a video game

  3. yes it is safe as long the RAMs are the same

  4. Yes I have did that no problem.if they are both DDR2

  5. Your RAM sticks must be of the same type and supported by the motherboard’s specs. If you want to see what type of memory that is supported by your computer then go online and go to “CrucialScan” (without the quotation marks) and they will do a scan of your computer and give you the memory that is supported by your motherboard. Mixing different types of RAM will not work, they must be the same!
