Melting a glass hard disk platter
**DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF!!** IBM/Hitachi hard disk drives use a glass platter, instead of the various metal alloys used in other drives. The glass platters are either coated or impregnated with a metallic media, which is what the data is stored on. In this video, I placed the platter into a 1200 watt microwave, expecting to see similar results to seen with a CD. What actually happened was even cooler than that; The glass melted!

cool…
I almost jumped out of my seat when it exploded
If this is the coolest shit you’ve ever seen then your life must suck.
Yes! Nice find. Will be doing this this weekend! I have 100’s of these glad platters. Also one way to get the metal off is by electrolysis. Worked sweet. Now I have a glass platter. ~Russ
tried it – why not – it’s only a small piece of glass – therefore at best a small explosion – LOL.
i broke a dead seagate under my bad and it was bad
@oshapley Wonderful! Have you ever seen an oven? Truly amazing devices, those ovens are…
Wow i think I know what a microwave looks like
Congratulations you are a pioneer of discovery! Your not that stupid. Your microwave looks expensive and you could have really hurt yourself, but you truly are the first one to microwave a platter on youtube. The metal conducts the heat to the glass and once the glass is glowing red it too becomes conductive, thus melting further. I am in the process of refining this process to create something neat-o. I will be using Pyrex to avoid the danger of explosion upon rapid cooling and maybe a mold.
Well thats one way to format your drive…..
Lets do it again….lol
there have been alot of reports of operating dificulties; hesitations, burns out..ect
a product of poor customer confidence
@libertypatrol Why are they “infamous?”
its hilarious how he uses the infamous inverter panasonic microwave
I just tried this. I used an old Western Digital drive platter. Apparently it’s metal. Word of warning to those who want to try this. If you put it on a glass…
Do not touch it. Picked it up and immediately heard a sizzling noise- before I even felt anything. D:
What you wrote – “DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF”
What we all read – “Have a go, this is fun”
Hey dude, do you have you own house, or are you living with someone?
Hahaha! turned off the light, omg. hahah xD
Touch it right after you open the door. I hear it is quite cool.
Actually it DID melt; it only broke due to thermal shock when I opened the door. The glass actually began to sag and change shape towards the end.
Actually it did’nt melt. It just broke down…
Actually, yes. I’ve seen most of his videos. Very interesting stuff!
Speaking of microwaving things, have you ever looked at JPizzle1122’s channel? You want to talk about microwaving stuff…
