open Hard Disk Drive – showing Head Crash
Try to compare it with one of those old LP records: imagine you’re playing a song and moving the record player which is like moving a running laptop when it’s reading/writing on the hard drive. Just one little hit and you might have a crack in your LP record. If that’s not sooo big you won’t even notice it on a hard drive because the electronic takes care of it by trying to avoid that section.

Do Hard Drives really fail that frequently?? I have never had a hard Drive fail on me and I have had 4 laptops. My new one has a SSD so I don’t have to worry about it at all but I’m just asking. It’s too late for me but do you think it is worth getting SSDs? Do they save any significant battery life?
???1.8????
@HomoCyberneticus
gr8 info. thx in advance! much appreciated..
@theringfilm1 honestly, there is a chance of being able to recover data from this disk. However, you would have to hand it over to a professional hdd recovery specialist. As long as the hdd was not spun, and the dusk was not wiped of the disk (very gently removed) so the disk was not scratched, it could be possible to replace the read heads and get it working long enough to backup the data. However, it’s probably dead.
@theringfilm1
No chance. Even a single microscopic spec of dust that makes contact with the platter is more then enough to damage the heads. That HDD is as good as gone.
@chenur
It could be possible to read your data if you replace the electronic control board of your HDD with another of IDENTICAL model… that is, of course, if the “electric shock” didn’t damage the innards of HDD.
P.S. Don’t even CONSIDER moving the actual HDD platters from yours to another disk! They are meant to be operated in next-to-zero dust environment of your HDD enclosure [so, don't open your HDD cover in any case].
Yup hate when dat happens. ?
Is it possible to recover data from an open hard drive that has A LOT of dust in it? i left it open for like a year and never did anything with it.
@EduEnYT
that is why SSD do exist.
HELLO TO ALL YOU PROFESSIONAL GEEKS! I HAVE A QUESTION, I’M SORRY IF IT WAS A DUMBEST QUESTION BUT PARDON ME I’M DYING BAD.
shock circuit had just occur to my HDD so it no longer turning on. i need my data back, and i was planing to move the disk record to another HDD but i doubt if the disk couldn’t be allowed to see the light of the day. any suggestion from you professionals?
the head went to town on that platter
hard drives suck…. their data gets corrupted with magnetic interference and they’re as fragile as shit.
why is it in the middle???
THATS A SEA-CRAP DRIVE
Yeah..you are all smartass bitches arent you..
That hard disk is done for. Save what you can off it if you can access it at all and trash it.
fxck off, 300tb. do you know how much 1tb is you imbasieal. are you sure you got ya figures right ?
there is a rumor going around saying someone is making a 300TB HDD drive
Suppose so, thats probably why in the EEE series they used the Flash based SSD’s to save costs and battery life
its not entirely bad just plug in another drive and use a free program called partition magic , it will coppy your entire hard drive onto another and u can trow away the broken one and boot of the new one
yes but the HDD that use ram technology tend to need a continuous power source otherwise the data degrades and so alot of the time they will have some kind of batter power souce inside to retain data just like in many onld windows PDA’s that lost all data when the batter died but thankfully new batteries have been desighned that can last over 20 years for the drives
Thats partly true, in the case of SSD’s made using Flash like memory sticks have limited write and read, but so does every memory stick, most of them know use Ram based for ssd which is technically infinite
problem with solid state drive is they have a maximum read rite limit of eg 10 million reads and writes
(once u go ovr it freezes permenantly) whereas old school hard drives have either really high read rite limit or unlimited
u can replace the dell hard drive with a non dell hardrive?
hi,i just want to ask,what am i going to do with my dell laptop…i tried to DST Short Status Test and the test result is failed..it says that Unit 4: Drive Self Test Failed. Status Byte 79…i don’t understand it..can u help me?so that i know what i am going to do..thank u and looking forward to hearing it from you…
YOU KNOW WHERE IT SAYS THOSE ON,LOADING,AND CHARGING ICONS WHERE IT IS GREEN. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY LAPTOP! ITS THE SAME ONE YOU GOT. IT HAS A MEDAL STICKING OUT OF IT AND I CANT PUSH IT BACK IN AND IF I DO AND IF I DO IT TO HARD, IM SCARED THAT IT WILL FUCK UP THE SCREEN AND FUCK UP THE CIRCUITS. PLEASE HELP!!
Kieran: I love the price and performance of Dell’s. To bad they look lame
your a freemason >_<
@iftibashir Yer! Personally I would push it to a 500gb if you want to future proof!
I just replaced mine, so easy. Thanks for the help!
Great idea, thanks!
@wzb3 – It would probably be cheaper to buy a bigger drive – around a 120 or 250GB, since these are the standard nowadays.
This is looks easy. I think it would work for a Dell Inspiron 600m too. Any advice on what brand and size of hard drive? The original one was a Hitachi 30gb drive and I would like to at least double it. Since I can’t find it at Dell.com, I can get it from Ebay.
When I turn my laptop on it says read failure on internal harddrive can someone help?
Thanx alot man, you saved me from castrating my laptop to find the damn hard drive!
10 out of 10! Thanks!!!
Same thing happened to me. That’s a sure sign of hard disk failure.
This helped a lot,thanks =D
@mnb222 – When changing your hard drive, the replacement drive will have no data on it. Therefore you will need to re-install your operating system and all software etc from scratch.
what did u mean by 2:43 plz?
will we lose the date after removing/replacing ?
i am getting the gtx 260m graphics card and the intel core i7-720 with the 4gb dual channel ddr3 1333mhz!!! and 1920×1080 hd screen is this good together?
our dell inspiron 1200 won’t boot the OS. I’ve tried several options including safe mode, it just freezes where it normally should start loading windows. I ran a diagnostics test too and it fails…and repeatedly plays these sounds. Anyway i’m gnna try removin the hdd and fit it back again, shouldn’t be too different from this vid – might work.
@iftibashir thanks so much.
@MochaSmooth247 – Go for a Seagate Momentus. They are pretty quiet in operation and also run cooler then usual. Cant beat em’!
If you want better then a hard drive, but dont want to spend as much on a SSD drive – check out the Momentus XT – it comes in between both…..
My harddrive dead on my dell and I would like to replace it myself> what is the best type of hardrive to get or does it matter its a latitdud d630 . Thanks in advance
Thanks, buddy. That’s a big help.
My set is specific for laptops.
Where did you get the cylinder shaped screwdriver? My harddrive crashed and I bought a new one, but I couldn’t take the back out. I took it to best buy and they could’nt remove the screwdriver either! So now my laptop and new harddrive is just sitting in a corner because of the stupid screws!
If it states no HDD found – then the issue could be:
1. HDD not properly installed.
2. HDD is faulty.
3. BIOs settings are incorrect for the HDD. Ensure it is set to auto-detect.
