Your system might only allow you run 512MB of ram. Or they are not compatable with each other. Like if you wanted one gig of ram you should get two like 512 sticks.

first off, as long as the ram sticks are the same speed (eg. DDR2 533) they will be compatible. HOWEVER, make sure the larger stick is in slot 1 and the smaller is in slot 2.

he should know better than to make a comment like this, it is pure assumption. if 512 works fine, ALL that means is its the correct type for your motherboard. it DOES NOT mean that your system will now accept 1 gig. By his theory, a honda civic that has a 4 cylinder engine works fine…. therefore an 8 cylinder engine in the same car would also work fine

incase you didnt look at my profile, I also work with computers every day. I am a lil more than an IT tech though. I am a data analyst at an ivy league university with a degree and many certifications. besides my full time job, i run a repair business and do consulting part time. 1 bit of advise, NEVER assume. and as a tech, you should know that for every standard archatecture machine out there, there is 2 non standards that were thrown together by the neighbors brothers best friend.
It’s probably because your using different types of RAM made from different manufacturers. Theoretically this should make no difference but in reality it does. Best is to buy pairs from the same manufacturer and use them together. It could also be that the 256 stick is damaged. First try putting the larger capacity RAM in slot 1 and the other in slot 2 and see if the problem clears, if not just buy two identical sticks of 512MB and use them as a pair.
The 256 MB stick is either bad, not compatible with your computer, or not compatible with your 512 stick. The first two are the more likely answers.
Since your computer works fine with only the 512 stick, that tells me it can recognize at least a gig of RAM. My suggestion is that you get another 512 MB stick to bring your computer up to a gig. Visit a site like crucial.com that has a system scanner, let it check out your computer, and see what recommendations it makes for adding RAM. Good luck and hope that helps!
eire: Same to you. I work with computers for a living, so I know what I’m talking about. There’s a slight chance that the asker’s computer might not take a gig of RAM (if it’s an older model or has some off-beat architecture), which is why I recommended a visit to crucial.com. “Don’t just take my word for it; check out Crucial to make sure.”
