Let me explain how the system works
The original xbox has a hard drive that’s paired to the motherboard with a unique key that’s located in the bios of the xbox. Every time you turn on your xbox the system sends the code to the hard drive and unlocks it allowing it to be used. When the system is shut back off it relocks the hard drive so you can’t just take it out of the xbox and modify the contents using a computer.
What you’ll need to do is make an eeprom reader
Here’s the instructions

With the eeprom reader you’ll be able to get a dump of the code (the eeprom.bin file) and use it to lock another hard drive.
Just follow that tutorial, it should set you in the right direction. You’ll have to xboxhdm and if you want to softmod the xbox while you’re at it look up C4RN1 on afterdawn. I have softmod files in my signature, just build your new hard drive with my files and when you turn on your xbox it should load the modded dash.
