  1. You should buy 2 to 4Gb of memory. And find out what speeds of memory your motherboard supports as you should upgrade to 800 memory or so if you can. And you would want dual channel memory, that is where two sticks of RAM are electrically connected to increase the speed overall. Same with triple channel but that connects 3 sticks together.

  2. the channels in random access memory determine how many paths are available between the Memory Controller and the memory. the peak amount of data that could be transferred at any time using single channel would be less than that of a dual or triple channel becuase the information is only being sent via a single path.

Your slots for ram are colored two differen colors for a reason. This reason is that your mother board supports use of dual channel ram (HIGH FIVE!) if you so chose to invest in dual channel ram, your RAM should be matched in pairs. This is why slots 1 and 3 are different colored than slots 2 and 4.

Channels are nice, however the GB of ram you have installed will have a more significant affect on speed. i have no idea how you operated on 1 GB i would have died lol. personal opinion, a computer should have a minimum of 3GB of ram installed for optimal performance. however if you plan on any form of gaming, using photoshop, or anyother ram sucking processes you may want to consider investing in more RAM.

Before going out and investing in RAM though, i would first open up the task manager and look at the Total and Available amounts of Physical Memory your Computer is running on that way when you go to buy ram you know how much to look for, but generally 3GB of ram is sufficient for basic computer usage

generally on a computer, (personal opinion) you should have a minimum of 3 Gb RAM for optimal performance
