What is the software used to format my harddisk such that the data should never be taken back?

Question by hilan: What is the software used to format my harddisk such that the data should never be taken back?
Now, eventhough we format the harddisk, using some softwares we can take all the data in that harddisk. So if I sell my PC other people may restore my secret data. So can you say any software to prevent this restoring? How can I make my harddisk like a new harddisk(completely formatted)?

By all technicalities, the only way to COMPLETELY wipe your hard drive is to buy a new one. formatting it is enough for most people to not go digging around looking for anything. For a little extra security there are programs that will write to the entire hard drive and erase everything on it time and time again. This would make it incredibly difficult for anybody to find anything of yours on the hard drive. If you have extremely personal information and you are overly paranoid about it your best bet would be to just destroy the hard drive altogether.

  1. A standard format, like the format used by windows will not really delete all of the data. The data is still there it sort of just removes the logical explanation of all of the data. When i really want to get rid of my data, like for example when i sell an old computer, I use a program called Kill Disk. There are many similar programs out there but I know Kill Disk is awesome. What Kill Disk does is rewrite every sector on the drive with zeros. By actually writing over every portion of the drive you are now effectively removing the data. There is a Free version which should be adequate but the pro version of kill disk even has a setting that meets the requirements of the US Dept of Defense. Give it a shot. http://www.killdisk.com/
