@Orcinus24×5 Thanks. Galvanic corosion is a better name for it, where the atmosphere acts as the electrolyte. I have seen its effects on improperly soldered connections on shipboard PCBs.
@madamerotten it’s called galvanic corrosion and does NOT always occur between all dissimilar metals. The anodic difference between copper and lead/tin alloy solder is low enough that it can pretty much be ignored in all but the harshest of environments. The reason for clipping the leads before soldering is not for galvanic corrosion reasons, but to prevent possible stress-cracking of the finished solder joint.
