How many tips do Baristas actually make?

Question by Maggie: How many tips do Baristas actually make?
I am beginning a job as a barista soon and was told we will get tips. (I, honestly, think this is kind of weird because baristas are paid at least minimum wage and do not rely on tips.) I was just curious if anyone else works in a coffee shop and makes tips. How much on average?

  1. When I worked at Starbucks, we got tips weekly. All of the tips from the tip jar were collected every night, and at the end of the week, the tips were divided up based on how many hours each person worked. At my home store, tips were generally about $1.25 or so an hour. I usually got about $20-$30 dollars a week in tips depending on how many hours I worked that week. When I worked at a few stores in Vegas, tips worked out to be about $4.00 an hour. It all depends on where you are.
