The practice of ‘Trick or Treat’ dates back a long time, but one cannot come to a definite conclusion whether it had anything to do with what we associate trick or treating with today. It is surprising though that trick or treating is not necessarily associated to celebrating Halloween, as in many countries such as Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Finland and Austria; while in many regions of the United States such as Iowa, Ohio and Massachusetts trick or treating is not referred to as an occasion celebrated to mark Halloween. The 31st of October of each year marks the day when Halloween is celebrated, but some the countries mentioned above do not practice trick or treating on that day. These countries have their own story to tell to mark the origin of Halloween.
Many say that trick or treating began with people going to houses to pray for the dead family members and get back something to eat in return. This was done to mark All Saints Day. This practice dates back to pagan times, but again, it cannot be determined that it originated the practice of trick or treating on Halloween in general. According to urban beliefs, the very idea of trick or treating literally came from tricking or treating, as in, those who did not receive a treat would trick those who they’d expect to get a treat from.
Children would wear costumes and go from one house to another to receive treats. The treats were mostly food items of all kinds. Those who would not receive treats or rewards would trick or play pranks on householders. In recent years the treats that the children were to receive were changed to candies and chocolates rather than fruit and cakes to literally bribe them to stop from playing ‘tricks’ on people.
The post World War era saw a boom in the manufacturing of chocolates and candies, specially meant for trick or treating. This practice is mostly done in the US, and is widely known as the most common origin of trick or treating. But other parts of the world too may be considered to know the origin of trick or treating. Countries such as Scotland, Ireland or even Greece (Trick Or Treat in Greek means ‘Sorcery of Darkness’) have their own tales about trick or treating. In Scotland, children were expected to help the ‘guisers’ or those who they dressed up as to garner treats, while in Ireland people practiced ‘souling’ which is explained above (praying for the dead to receive treats).
Trick or treating, to a very wide range, has been given a very common root of origin popularized through Hollywood movies as well as TV serials where the emphasis is given more towards American culture and relating trick or treating directly to Halloween. Hence, an average person thinks that the origin of trick or treating has everything to do with the origin of Halloween, which is not true to a very large extent.
There is not one, not two, but many origins of trick or treating. All in all, to determine the exact origin of trick or treating is impossible with so many stories to conclude from.
