What is a “fair” way to “reward” someone for stealing your drinks from your private refrig at your desk?

Question by Kim Y: What is a “fair” way to “reward” someone for stealing your drinks from your private refrig at your desk?
I am weary of supporting someone’s theft of my waters and soda drinks. Can’t lock my little desk refrig. Can’t lock my office. Can be co-worker, can be students. Totally unmonitored.

I need some ideas of how to remedy this…Just a little something to “discourage” the thief from removing items in the future.

; ] thanks!

Get some lemon/lime Gatorade and pee in it. That’ll stop them.

  1. If they are in plastic bottles: Open a few drinks, add a some drops of visine, and reseal them with a lighter.

  2. Have you tried placing a mouse trap in there? lol Seriously, how about putting up a sign that says “If it’s not yours, don’t touch it” or something similar?

  3. If they’re in bottles you can break the seals and even take a little out of them so they look “used.” Or put a note hanging just inside the fridge that reads, “Can you guess which one I spit in?” I’m sure the culprit will get the message that you know they’re stealing and you’re not willing to just blow it off.

  4. If you find out who’s doing it, do something like hide their desk supplies. Hide their staplers, papers, tape, pens, etc. If you really wanna get extreme, hide their keyboards or mouses!

  5. If you’re a teacher this might not be ok.

Put something really gross or unsual in there.
Like a condom with lotion in it, underwear with chocolate “stains” or some wierd medical stuff like insulin labeled AIDS medication.

If they mention it to you or someone else ask them how/why they were in your private area.

  6. At my old office, one of my coworkers had a webcam facing his mini fridge hooked up to his computer because people took his sodas.

  7. Before you follow the idea of putting something in the drinks to make the thief regret their actions, remember that if your fridge is not secured, they can do the same thing back!

Remember that joke? Guy got upset that someone was drinking his stuff so he put up a sign that said “I spit in this”. He came back to find someone had written on his sign, “So did I!”

Yes, you can lock a desk refrigerator, if you are the handy sort, or can ask someone to do this. If you offer to pay an office maintenance worker a few bucks, I bet they could help with this:

Measure the edge of the door of the fridge so you know how much space (width) you have to work with.

Go to a hardware store and buy a small metal hasp and a padlock to fit it. Make sure that the part that will hold the padlock is small enough to fit on the edge of the door. Get metal screws and something to start the holes with.

Install the hasp on your fridge and lock it when you are not there.

Hasps and locks are cheap, and this small expense would foil most thieves and give you peace of mind.

  8. piss in the bottles

  9. If I were you, I would call some camera stores or other stores they may recommend to see if you could rent a camera. It would not have to be a huge set up because you only need to record the refrig area. It would be interesting to catch the thief on tape. And, once word got around that you had him/her on tape, no one else would dare take a chance stealing from the refrig. It may be more than one person, so you may want to record things for a while.

  10. There are alarms that you can place by the bottom of the door … it looks like a door stop. (you can find them in travel catalogs)
this WILL SOUND VERY LOUD.. and then you will know who is doing it. AND SURELY IT WILL EMBARRASE them.

Or just install a lock on it.
Leave it empty for a while
put a sign that says “smile you are on candid camera”
can you put it inside another cabinet that is lockable ?
